Norton Subcourse Methodist Chapel, 'Norton Chapel' or just 'The Chapel', serves the villages of Norton Subcourse and neighbouring Thurlton. Surrounded by working farms, open fields and marshland, the chapel reflects its Methodist heritage.

In 1800 over a third of the UK population made their living from the land. They were attracted to the simplicity of Methodism, often through meetings in the fields led by evangelical preachers. Open air meetings gave way to chapels whose architecture reflected that simplicity and made them recognisably different from churches.

The first chapel was opened in 1864, built for £200. It was replaced in 1900 by the current building, which still bears 'Primitive Methodist' over the entrance.

While worship remains central to its life, the Chapel works hard at being a community hub, hosting a range of activities and events throughout the year. Regulars include a Gospel Choir, Community Breakfast, Ukulele Club, Babies and Toddlers Group, Table Tennis Club and a recently established Bereavement Group.

One of the highlights of the year is Jimmy's Garden Party, named after Jimmy Goodrum, one of the old style preachers. It is a popular event featuring music, games, a barbecue and family activities, with local jazz band The Fat Pandas a regular attraction.

The Chapel also acts as the distribution hub for the magazine of the Raveningham Area, reaching around 1,500 households, and serves as a polling station and venue for Norton Parish Council. It is also regularly used for weddings, celebrations and wakes, continuing its place at the heart of village life.

Sunday worship

The Chapel holds a service on the first Sunday of the month at 10.00am, with a variety of visiting preachers, detailed on the current Circuit Plan. Community Breakfast, free to all, is on the fourth Sunday.
